Hi Chris, George and all,
From: Chris Barker <ftog@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
>For me, the new Olympus Pen (E-PL2) is the threat to my ownership of the
GF1.
Well, I'm very happy with the GF1, but since I got it with the 20/1.7 only,
I had "wide-angle" hunger ;-) Despite being able to use all my film lenses,
RF included, the crop factor made the wides nearly useless -- and RF lenses
do not perform very well at the corners on the GF1.
I thought about purchasing a m4/3 wide, like Panny's 7-14 or Oly's 9-18...
but then I ran into an affordable, second hand M8, which could use my RF
super-wide "arsenal" decently (just x1.3 crop) . I'm sort of a RF guy, thus
was very pleased with it and forgot about m4/3 wides.
Anyway, any RF (film or digital) has its limitations -- close-up/macro and
(long and/or fast) teles. But then, the GF1 does it very well -- the crop
factor being an advantage here. Only the EVF is lacking some refresh rate
and *a lot* of resolution :-( The LCD is faster and has more (about twice)
pixels, but it's hard to see in bright backlight and its use impairs
steadiness -- one of the reasons I got the EVF.
But I fell in love with the X100... A digital camera with a clear, beautiful
finder _with_ all info superposed (unlike an external optical VF) *AND* a
nice EVF with 7 times the pixel count of mine? And classic controls?? I
*must* support that! ;-) ;-)
If everything goes right, it will replace the GF1 as the "take-away" camera,
leaving it as the (long) tele body. Shame for the EVF, now my question goes:
is there a chance of Panny providing a better finder (like the E-P2's), or
is it a limitation of the signals applied to the port?

Always a nice thing...

Never thought about that. I presume most SLRs will give a somewhat larger
distance, but not much, am I wrong?
>Another advantage: Use of the 3d lens (even though it does not

I believe the body needs a firmware update for the 3D lens to work as
intended. Not sure if it's available for the GF1.

As already discussed, it shouldn't be difficult, except for finding the
propietary connectors. Maybe if the output signals are too weak for a
reliable transmission...
Meanwhile, as a gross experiment... has anyone tried the GF1's HDMI output?
Does it work while in live-view mode? It could be linked to one of those 7"
compact TV monitor with HDMI input. This one (<
http://store.zacuto.com/Marshall-7-inch-LCD-HDMI-Monitor.html>) looks
suitable, although expensive.
Cheers,
