Or, it could just be that I don't like his photography. I've seen more than
one "vintage" print (oh how I hate that term, invented by greedy sales
gallery owners to increase profit) of his, and I find his photos to be
invariably cold and lifeless.
The prints were really rather flat. Some could be from age, but.

Well, a couple of thoughts cross my mind:
1. The prints haven't aged as well not necessarily due to fading,
etc., but the improved quality of papers. We have far "whiter" and
"brighter" papers now than 40 years ago. There were more options back
then, but not all of them had the brilliance we have today.
2. Lighting isn't "original intent"
3. Choice in tonalities may not mesh with current visual preference.
