>From what I see I would indeed conclude that a corner has broken off. Could
be caused by a drop. The corner is quite large though, stretching 1/2 the
length and 1/4 the width of the shoe. I can imagine the flash indeed to work
fine, at least for normal horizontal shooting. The shoe is a weak point
though, even more so when holding the camera with flash sideways. IMO The
bidding is low enough to consider if you want the flash.

There's an FL-36 flash on eB*y at a low price, auction
220719196823. The third picture shows the bottom of the hot
shoe, about which the seller says "The corner of the hot shoe
was broken off when it was brand new but it has never, and does
not affect performance." The shoe bottom looks a bit melted to
me.
Any guesses as to what could have caused this?
