In the same way that hackers have managed to improve aspects of Canyon
cameras with CHDK, so have the capabilities of the Panasonic m4/3 cameras
been improved. I believe the changes are mainly to remove some of the
limitations on HD video - limitations which are presumably for marketing
purposes, to preserve the premium prices on other models - but also to
remove the limitation on use of after-market batteries (for example). And
the term "hackable" no doubt refers to the firmware being of a suitably
early vintage. The response of Panasonic to the hacking has been to encrypt
the later versions of the firmware.
I believe that it's the work of the same guy as is behind CHDK, Vitaly
Kiselev, and there is plenty of detail at www.dvxuser.com

I wanted to ask the same question. These are popular on FM. Apparently there
is a version that is not hackable.
