Forgive me for being a curmudgeon, but I absolutely despise holiday travel -- I
just won't do it any more.
I recall trying to drive from Portland to Seattle the day before Thanksgiving
one year. It's normally about three hours. It took us nearly eight.
It wouldn't have been so bad if it had been a steady 30 mph, but it would
whipsaw up to 70 mph, then down to a dead stop, then up to 70 again -- the most
annoying drive I've ever done. I called in sick the following Monday to avoid
driving home on Sunday.
Hopefully, Charles will have much less competition for road space going to
North Caroline. Travel safely...
Our family tries to get together at other, non-holiday times, most recently for
my Mother's 80th birthday near the end of October. No fuss, no muss, the
airports were fairly empty -- much more enjoyable then enduring the travel
there, then spending the time there dreading the travel back.
