This is the new (Oct. 2010) Colorado River Bridge adjacent to Hoover Dam
outside Las Vegas. These shots are taken from the lake (north) side of
the dam. The land to the right/west of the bridge is Nevada and to the
left/east of the bridge is Arizona. When I look at these photos they
remind me of a model rather than the real thing. Perhaps because the
scale is so large it's a bit hard to comprehend in a photo.
Look especially at photo #7 where you can see cars on the roadway
crossing the dam and people on the pedestrian walkway crossing the
bridge in the background. I don't know the exact number but the bridge
is about 835 feet (256 meters) above the river.
The roadway over the dam used to be the main road in this area that
connected Arizona and Nevada but it was closed years ago for fear of
sabotage to the dam after 9/11. Now one can freely drive between the
two states again using the new bridge. One can still drive across the
dam in a car but all are subject to inspection.
Some construction photos here including shots from the downstream side
of the dam. <http://www.mansanity.com/colorado-river-bridge/>
Also note my own last two shots which show how low Lake Mead has become
due to high water usage and lack of snowfall recently. The water level
is now at a historic low but in fact is only a few feet below the levels
once reached in the 50s and 60s.
I'd have loved to take a walk on the new bridge but we had my 89 year
old father with us. The approach to the bridge for pedestrians is a
long walk up many flights of stairs or ramps and he would not have been
able to do it. Another time perhaps.
