I've been thinking about planting a hydrangea. I came across some oakleaf
hydrangeas at a local nursery. The red leaves on the earlier picture looked
very similar to yours, but yes the flower clusters seem to always be much
more conical. Perhaps what you have is viburnum opulus

No, Jeff, they are an earlier ancestor. The blooms are different. See this
