Interesting. The outhouse on my Grandfather's farm was built by a WPA
crew. As I understood it, the WPA project was that they would dig the
hole and build the outhouse for $25. The floor and the base for the
seat was concrete but the seat was nicely finished and varnished.. I
seem to remember two sizes of holes plus a lid. Not hardwood, though.
Just Pine or Fir. But very well built. Of course during the '30 s $25
was quite a bit of money. A man could work hard all day for a dollar or
less.
