Brian,
British Columbia has built two mills to produce lumber products for the
Chinese market (metric). A good strategic move as the US market has
tanked and there is an oversupply of imperial production capacity. It
recently eclipsed Russia as the #1 supplier of forest products to China.
The finished lumber is a very small percent of the total export volume
and is meant to showcase the quality of the finished product vs imported
logs and to get around the problems that you mention. As the demand in
China for better quality finished material increases countries like NZ
have a great opportunity.
