  I believe you are right Jim but according to this website they have
regained the ability to produce fruit ("Nature will find a way"). A lot of
these were planted around here especially after Hugo knocked down everything
else in 1989. They grow fast and make for nice Fall colors even in sunny SC
but they do tend to fall apart after 20-30 years.
