I remember my friend first used cassettes to save data for a system he
designed and built for on-air tabulating of vote returns. At that time, the
local stations used things like baseball scoreboards, with roatating numbers
operated by staehands behind the set. His system made it a character
generator operated by station seretaries (remember those?) who were quite
adept at operating a ten-key pad. The cassettes were more reliable than you
might imagine, although the transports were crap.
