In my experience, Apple has been exceedingly generous about out-of-warranty
repairs.
1) I bought the original Apple Color LaserWriter. Worked good for nearly two
years, and then changing the drum caused colours to go all wonky. It took a few
calls and emails and a free drum replacement trying to get it fixed, but then
Apple offered to buy it back at full list price, including all consumables I
had on hand and the full cost of my AppleCare contract. I had free color laser
printing for nearly two years!
2) Walking into an Apple Store might not be an option for some, but they're
just great. I had a DVI-VGA adaptor go wonky, intermittently changing colours
as you flexed the cable. I went into an Apple Store to buy a new one, but on a
whim, signed up for a "Genius" session to make sure that's what the problem
was. He took a brand new adaptor out of packaging, verified it worked on my
four-year-old laptop, then refused payment and let me take it with me. This for
a computer LONG out of warranty!
3) A similar thing happened with a laptop power supply with a wire that had to
be held "just so" in order to work. In this case, they didn't give me a new one
out of new packaging, but did give me one they had sitting around, at no cost,
out of warranty.
These are the sorts of things that inspire fanatic loyalty in a product or a
company.

Free enterprise ended in the United States a good many years ago. Big oil, big
steel, big agriculture avoid the open marketplace. Big corporations fix prices
among themselves and drive out the small entrepreneur. In their conglomerate
forms, the huge corporations have begun to challenge the legitimacy of the
state. -- Gore Vidal
