Lovely, unusual subject, nice composition. The colors on the web image and the
print are quite similar, with those on
the print perhaps a bit more vibrant. Still, I'd like to see how a first rate
inkjet print compares. I'm just not seeing
anything that says to me that the image colors transcend those of other
printing techniques. I can certainly imagine
that in dye transfer's time, especially before Cibachrome, that it stood out
from other wet printing technologies.
My problem with the print, though, isn't in the color, but in other aspects.
The fuzziness in the web image, which I
imagined to be an artifact of putting it on the web - isn't. And the print is
soft in a way I find disturbing. I don't
see any simple plane of clear focus. It may just be that the lack of a 3D look
makes it impossible for me to properly
judge the depth of each element.
Still, in most images, there is a clear point of focus where the subject(s) are
really sharp, with them becoming
progressively softer in front of and behind that plane. That just isn't the
case here. In fact, I have trouble finding a
point or two that are really sharp. I suppose it may be a combination of
conventional DOF and a slightly less than
perfect registration of the three color layers on this particular print.
The second issue, for me, is just plain old blown highlights in the yellow
fern, especially in the frond that's sticking
straight up. Now, looking at the web image, I see it's not blown in the way the
print is.
Sooo ... I took a chance on seeing and owning something legendary.

As it turned out, I got
something of legend, but in the 'flesh' a bit of a pig in a poke. I wouldn't
pay $10 for this print in a gallery.
Still, perhaps lesson learned. No more buying TOP print offers.
