The give away on the Black Swallowtail is the thistle. I don't think the Spicebush frequent those. See side by side comparison--hope the link works. http://tinyurl.com/2bq2gqe They can be tough to differentiate--at least for me. It is an atlas and not a field guide so doesn't point out the differences. I think the Sate Fair are a cultivar. Marnie considers them the Zuiko of zinnias--rarely disappoint. We plant them every year. http://www.backyardgardener.com/plantname/pda_4205.html Hit on the Google plant images for pics. Not sure how they were named though. Monarchs like 'em too. Great shots of the Black ST again--I am jealous. :-) Not easy to sneak up on them. Mike JW writes: "Thanks for supplying the name for the black butterfly. Too lazy to look it up. They were more furtive than the monarchs and I only encountered them on lonely roads when the thistle were in peak bloom. I couldn't get them to sit their wings for me, but from what you say I guess I was lucky to get them to sit. What does State Fair mean in this context? A brand name? An occasion? A place" -- _________________________________________________________________ Options: http://lists.thomasclausen.net/mailman/listinfo/olympus Archives: http://lists.thomasclausen.net/mailman/private/olympus/ Themed Olympus Photo Exhibition: http://www.tope.nl/ |
