Solved my problem - for the couple of people who might be interested.
Turns out I was still running OSX 10.6.0 - the original upgrade.
CS5 really insists on 10.6.2 or better. I got upgraded online to 6.4 and no
problems now.
Everything is running quite smoothly.
For some reason the automatic software upgrade notification was disabled,
I'm still putting in extra RAM - can't hurt.
