You have made the implicit generalization: Scanning = Nikon. That is not
correct.

I have tested my Canon FS4000. Focus is the same center to edge with one simple
auto focus in VueScan. I never have to
worry about scanner focus. This greater DOF is a major reason I chose the
FS4000 over any of the Nikons or Minoltas.
I agree with you that digital is "Less work and much higher quality." in almost
all respects, but not that "Scanning is
useless."
