I haven't been to Montreal in about 30 years so can't give you much
advice there. However, since you're going to be around for about 2
weeks you might consider going to Niagara Falls which straddles the
border between Ontario and New York State in the US. Plan to see it on
both sides of the border. It's an almost overwhelming sight. Staying in
Canada all the way you can drive there in about 7-1/2 hours. If you
elect to travel through New York it can take 8 or 8-1/2 hours depending
on your route.
If you drop straight south from Montreal into New York you can pass by
Lake Champlain. It's a resort area and a beautiful drive in the fall.
The area has lots of sugar maples which produce a lot of red coloration
when the leaves change. From there you can head west toward Buffalo and
Niagara Falls and will pass through the Finger Lakes region of New York.
Also very beautiful and dotted with hundreds of wineries which offer
tasting tours. Even a Frenchman might enjoy the New York wines! These
days most of them carry French names. :-)
OK, time for the Québécois to answer.
