It also depends on what you want to maintain detail in. If you are
doing a close-up of the moon (cell tower shot), then metering for the
moon to protect highlights is important. Shoot the moon and bring up
the midtones in post. Otherwise, Joel is correct, meter for what you
know and how you want it to land on the tonal scale. This is actually
Zone System 101 kinda stuff--learning how to spot meter and place
values.
Otherwise, just stick your camera on auto and dial in -1.0 to -2.0
exposure compensation. :)
