To add to the discussion ::
When I had a VW Beetle (ie the real thing) sometimes the cable to the
clutch would fray and snap. Not often; maybe every 100,000 miles or so.
Not a roadside fixit job that I'm aware of. But the gearbox on those little
cars
was a honey. The synchro-rings were very good. Push start, jump in, and
crash change the gears. By getting the revs right, there was no crash to the
change at all, changes smooth as silk.
No good for in the city, but for country "limp home mode", just A1.
