Chris Barker said that his wife was thinking of leaving an amaryllis
outdoors in future. My understanding has always been that the bulbs
should be kept above 0C - and you should not bury them in a pot or
elsewhere. I have quite a lot of bulbs (>20) and overwinter them in
a greenhouse at about 3C. I stopped putting them outside in the
summer after flowering when something (a vole?) found they that made
a tasty snack and took lots of small bites out of my bulbs.
I find them fascinating to photograph on occasion and have used quite
a bit of film on them in my Olympus cameras over the years. They are
probably the main reason I get my tripod out these days as mine
mostly flower indoors in the UK spring when natural light levels are
not very good.
