I'm glad that whomever mentioned the 5D mirror repair brought it up. I
had known about it for a long time but, in reading Canon's announcement
it seemed very clear to me that it wouldn't be repaired unless the
mirror had actually fallen off. I think it was JH who expressed some
indignation with Canon should that actually be the case.
So I emailed Canon and got a very quick and apologetic response saying,
we're very sorry to cause you a problem and sure, we'll be happy to do a
"preemptive fix" and will send you a repair form and UPS shipping label.
I sent the camera off via UPS late Tuesday afternoon expecting it
wouldn't be back terribly soon. Canon had promised 7-10 business days
for turnaround. But I've already received a reply this morning that the
repair is done and the camera was shipped back via FedEx yesterday.
Then I got a call from FedEx a short time later telling me to expect the
camera on Monday before 3pm and that I needed to be home to sign for it.
ps: Don't do as I did. I forget to remove one of my 8GB SanDisk Ultra
III CF cards when stripping the camera of "accessories". I only
realized it later when I noticed that the last set of images I had shot
(at a Cayuga Lake winery) had not yet been downloaded and the card was
clearly missing. An email message to Canon said they'd made a note of
it and would be sure it was returned.
pps: The winery is the Sheldrake Point winery. Recommended in the
event that you're traipsing the Finger Lakes wine trail. We
brought home a very pleasant Merlot and 3 different dry whites.
