Hi David and all,
From: David Irisarri Vila <div2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
>It would be nice to see pictures taken with GF1 + 40/2 using f2 f2.8 f4 but
also f8 and f16.
It's been a long time, but here's a test. Not very good, but you get the
idea:
<http://cjss.sytes.net/post/zuiko40f2/>
All files straight from the camera. It's tested at every aperture, although
the light was changing rapidly. Also a few closeups at the widest apertures
-- in very dim light!
General comments: as expected, contrast/sharpness is moderate when wide open
(although with good resolution), but improves a lot already at f/2.8.
There's not much change in performance or image style from f/4 and beyond...
_Longitudinal_ CA is basically gone by f/4, which is remarkable for any F2
lens -- they usually need to be stopped down to at least F5.6 to control CA.
There is, however, some _lateral_ CA visible, that won't improve by stopping
down (optical laws!) but doesn't seem too intrusive to me and, best of all,
it's easily corrected by software or even a RAW developer -- there's no way
to improve longitudinal CA in post.
About handling... you already know the aperture ring problem -- I make it
easier by keeping a Hoya UV all the time. But the adapter to micro4/3 is
LONGER than the lens itself :-( so the whole system is not very compact.
Compared to competition... the Voigtländer SL Ultron 40/2 (no longer
available in OM mount) is a better performer of about the same size, but
focuses only down to 0.38m (vs. 0.3 the Zuiko, remarkable). The _best_ 40/2
I know for the GF1, in terms of image quality, handling and compact size, is
the Minolta M-Rokkor (Leica M mount), and the adapter is also way thinner...
but focuses from 0.75m only -- rangefinder limitations!
Cheers,
