Actually, it's not even close to being symmetrical. It's a typical gauss
design, the unique thing being no cemented elements. (6 elements, 6 groups).
Re: the 38/macro and screens: the 1-11 and 1-12 will be best for this lens. I
had both at one point, I liked the 1-12 the best. The varimagni is a must,
since it has an adjustable diopter and the 1-12 screen requires a different
focusing technique (since it's projecting an aerial image) than most other
screens, and having the correct diopter setting in place is a must. An OM-4 or
other camera with adjustable diopter built in would be a worthy alternative to
varimagni but the right-angle viewing is handy too with the VM.
