I agree. Although I slightly prefer the vertical composition, the big
difference to me is the different exposure.
The horizontal images both have only a little sky in them and the
cameras or operator have exposed to make the majority of the subject
rather light, blocking up the sky highlights.
The inclusion of much more sky in the vertical image has pushed the
exposure down. The highlights still seem to me just a little compressed,
but are fully recoverable, if desired. The darker, warmer quality of the
rest seems to me more like shade at 7pm on a September evening than the
others. It's that old tale; a shot of a black cat in a dark room taken
with auto exposure will look like a gray cat in a medium lit room.
Personally, I like it with just a bit more late light drama.
