Well, John, the answer would probably surprise you. Let's take a cost of a
nickle for an extra 3 feet at the manufacturer's level. You can double that
for every stage of the process: 5 cents cost to the manufacturer, ten to the
next party, on to the USA importer where it's got up to a couple of bucks,
which doubles again to the distrubutor, and at Best Buy it will be five or
ten bucks. I can assure you that the retailer's buyer is pushing their
supplier to take out costs so they remain competitive. These changes can
mean only pennies at t he manufacturing level. Manufacturers already take
time to remove costs on their own.
Remember when cassette tape was used as computer storrage devices? I had a
friend that was using one as a part of a product he designed for TV
stations. He went to the US distrubutor that told how their costs were "tto
high" for Radio Shack, despite the fact that they had sorked diligently to
remove costs. the final result was that the drive sold by RS had motors
where instead of bearings, the motor had brass bushings.
Think about that when shopping.
