I wasn't as keen on the GF-1. Admittedly I only had it for a couple of
hours for a walkaround but in terms of usability, features, whatever,
I decided that the EP-1 was better on features and that I should wait
for the PEN-2 in my search for a low-cost Leica.
Reasons?
Pretty much the same sensor but the Oly engine does colour better.
The Panasonic electronic finder is not very good.
Zoom lenses - the Oly is a neater concept.
There were others but I can't remember now.
On the other side the 20mm is so much nicer than the 17mm and the rear
LCD on the PEN isn't as good.
However, I can buy a 20mm and the viewfinder on the PEN-2 is amazing -
it's better than the screen in some ways - very bright and crisp, the
best EVF I've ever seen.
I bought the 4/3rds adapter as well and was a bit concerned about the
'limitations with lenses that don't support contrast detect'.
Shouldn't have been. They work perfectly. I was playing with the 50mm
f2 with MF assist ON. Brilliant. Touch the manual focus ring and it
jumps to magnified view for precise focussing. I just love that
feature and was glad it works with the older Zuikos. (The GF-1 does it
too but I haven't tested it with Zuikos). Because it's so solid, it
doesn't feel unbalanced with the 50mm or other standard lenses like
the 9-18mm. The 25mm plus adapter is about the size of an old OM 50/1.8.
Cost here was $1600 for the viewfinder/zoom kit and another $300 for
the adapter. (Halve those for pounds - I did get a small discount).
Would have been cheaper from NY but I didn't want to wait. I got an
email from a friend in a good camera store telling me that he had two
in (and that it was brilliant with OM Zuikos) and would I like to
fondle the other? By the time I got there (rather quickly) he'd bought
one of them for himself!
