I always remember a joke where a visitor asks if he can use the
bathroom and finds himself alone, desperate and embarrassed in a room
with a bath, sink, but no pan. And rest room is very American - can't
imagine why you guys would want to take your rest in one.
Head is purely nautical and has a clear derivation - it was placed at
the head of the boat where it would get flushed out by waves.
