Lock it at F1.8 wouldn't you? I have a Russian Cyclops F2 night vsion  
scope lens with no aperture diaphragm at all - T mount. I don't use it  
that often but a friend who specialises in available ligh soft & moody  
stuff thinks it's awesome.
