Bill,
My understanding is that pollen from altered plants can blow into
neighboring fields and polinate non-altered strains, transferring the
altered characteristics to the seeds from that field. Then, the owners of
the altered strains can bring suit against the neighbor for inappropriate
use of their product, even though the neighbor had know reason to expect
this to take place.
A lawsuit can bankrupt a small farmer, and any settlement due the original
large owner may be settled by transfer of the land. Hence, the small farmer
is gone, and the large company just keeps growing.
I saw a TV show based on this premise, about 2 weeks ago.
