If you check the eSIF you'll see that the G40 has a non-standard shoe.

By adapting the shoe of another flash unit the poster has been able to
fit the flash into the ISO size shoe of most cameras. He's also wired
the shoe so that it catches the focusing signal from the camera body and
turns on the focus assist light. The guide number of 40 is with the
zoom at telephoto position. Otherwise the flash is probably about the
same power as a T32. Having focus assist is valuable if you do a lot of
low light flash work in dance halls, etc. But, since the resulting
flash is manual, there's not much here to recommend this over a T32 or
any other older powerful and inexpensive manual/auto flash unit.
