Arca Swiss makes a beautiful geared tripod head they call the C1. For awhile
PhotoClam was marketing a copy of it in the US at about a third the price.
There has been a number of people that thinks the patents Arca-Swiss used to
block PhotoClam aren't really due to an original design on Arca-Swiss's
part. The geared mechanism has been available for various optical
assemblies. The PhotoClam Multiflex is at the bottom of the page at:

If you want to make a gear tripod head at a fraction of the cost of the Arca
Swiss C1 take a look at ebay 310148736444 . The right fittings at the top
and bottom would give you essentially the same thing as a $2500 C1.
Do a web search for goniometer and you are likely to turn up other examples.
