For reasons unknown to me f/2.8 is a magic number for the use of Canon manual focusing screens. The special manual focus screens specify that they're for the use of lenses of f/2.8 or faster. They're actually slightly dimmer than the standard screen. I don't know if that's the reason for the specification of f/2.8 or faster or if it has to do with the angle of incidence of the light rays on the screen... or both.
