This might be the most practical and least expensive solution.
Actually, it seems to me that the official Olympus power packs 1 and 2 are
nothing more than a battery holder in a case with the appropriate wire. I
am sure there are more battery-based power packs around. I have one but it
is for 9V (holds 6 x size C batteries).
However, looking around my box of power supplies, etc., I found a 6V pack
made by Powerex. I bought this several years ago to power a 6V stereo slide
viewer. You can read a review here:

It is very compact, lightweight and pretty :)
I just tried it with one of the flashes and the modeling lights come on
(they are bright!!!).
Now, I will wire a split adapter to power both lights (definitely) and maybe
also the main unit (I might skip this) since I don't always need the
modeling lights and it is better if these two are separated.
