Ken, this is one turning point IMO: where I live, 'economic downturn' is
a steady state.
So, walking along very different paths, I can no less than agree with
your current conclusions.
Anecdotally, in 2002 this country almost disappeared, sucked by
Argentina's default.
I had stopped taking photographs a few years ago, but my professional
work diminished and I looked for something else to do - I engaged into
this list.
I tried to print positive on paper, but the man had retired due to the
crisis. I met someone who had the scanner I'm currently using. Then came
the broadband internet, which until 2005 I didn't need at all. Ok, I
learned PS by myself, and windows too - and I obviously will not buy a
FF digital. Maybe I'll change this monitor when it works no more as it
should .... I'm not such an artist in photography, I only enjoy being
creative when in the mood, which not always strikes.

Well, that's good news - now that I have a 300 and a 2X-A, I think I
should follow an old advice of CH and move up to Provia 400X.
I cannot assess on the limiting factor you mention, because I looked up
the word 'slushware' - and couldn't find it.
And it's too late and am hungry, should go to sleep.
:-)
Fernando.
