On contemporary PCs, the jacks are software reconfigurable for different
uses.
In Control Panel, there should be an icon for the particular software
running your jacks. For example, C.H.'s computer uses Realtek, and mine
uses SigmaTel.
It's not the icon of a speaker labeled "Sound" or the mike labeled
"Speach Recognition", but an icon provided by the audio subsystem vendor.
In my case, it brings up a control panel different than C.H., but with
the same sort of choices. You need to set the back panel jack to the
correct use.
