The quality size designations between the E-510 and E-3 are not
consistent.
The E-510 defines the highest level as "SHQ" (super high quality) which
is 3648x2736 at 1:2.7 compression rate. Your E-510 file size results of
5-7.5MB are consistent with the expected average of 6.8MB.
The equivalent setting on the E-3 is termed "LSF" (large, super fine)
and specifies the same expected average file size of 6.8MB. The next
lower quality level "LF" (large, fine), which uses a compression rate of
1:4 vs 1:2.7, has an expected file size of 4.7MB. That's consistent
with your observed range of 4-5.5MB and I strongly suspect that the
camera is set at "LF".
As I noted in my response yesterday about quality settings in the E-3,
only 4 of 12 possible settings are directly settable from the normal
menu. Those 4 of 12 that are available are pre-set in the customization
menu. It may well be that you can't select "LSF" (or maybe just "LS" in
the menu system) because it hasn't been pre-selected as an option.
The quality customization settings will be found under
"Custom Menu 1" (wrench symbol with numeral 1),
sub-menu with: (crazy quality symbol <= )/COLOR/WB and
sub-sub-menu: (crazy quality symbol <= ) SET
Once there choose 4 of the 12 possible quality level combinations, one
of which you'll want to be "L" (large) with "SF" (superfine)
Get a Canyon if you don't like this nonsense. All combinations
(including raw) are instantly selectable with a jog wheel from the same
main menu entry. And never leave home without your digital camera's
user manual. I keep soft copies on the laptop as well as hard copies
for both cameras in the camera bag.
