Well, there are those several curves near the top which are a bit gnarly,
but it is amazing how safe this race has been through the years.
What makes Pikes Peak so challenging to a racer is that the "gravel" is
decomposed granite which is essentially round nuggets that roll. That
gravel is mighty slippery. On the roads in that area, you can get a car
going sideways at 20 miles per hour.
It's really fun watching the big trucks race. Makes the "Ice Road Truckers"
show pretty tame in comparison.
