The viewfinder in an OM camera always shows you the view at full aperture of
the lens - f/1.8 or whatever - regardless of what aperture you have selected
for the exposure. At f/1.8 the depth of field will be limited, and much
less than at (say) f/16. The DoF preview button on the lens allows you to
temporarily stop down the lens to the selected aperture. As a result the
image in the viewfinder darkens - but you can see how much more depth of
field you will be getting at the selected aperture, rather than at full
aperture.
