a file where it stores them and if something strange happens, it can't

Windoze allows each file type to be assigned a default application. You
can change it. Many multi-media apps give you a choice when you load
them which file types to make them the default for. Why QT may have set
itself as de4fault for JPGs, I don't know. It has not done so on my
machines. Might you have just accepted the defaults then you installed QT?
