I think Olympus has simply concentrated on zooms. The only camera
manufacturer who seems intent on making new primes is Pentax. At the
professional end of the scale (constant aperture zooms) the DZ zooms are
a stop faster than the competition. For example, the 14-35 and 35-100
(28-70 and 70-200 full frame equivalents) are f/2 lenses rather than
Canon and Nikon's f/2.8. The only problem with this strategy is that
these lenses are much more expensive than the full frame equivalents
which also go wider on the short end.
Sigma has made a couple of nice 1.4 and 1.8 primes but there's still not
much selection. But it has always been that the third party makers
survive by filling the void... often by trying to offer something faster
or equal performance for less money.
