I've railed about modern lens designs which use multiple aspheric lens
elements. These lenses are optimized for the in-focus point and can actually
have the neat characteristic of fattening up the plane of in-focus.
However, what you will see happen with aspheric shaped lenses is the
out-of-focus rays are misguided and instead of landing where they are
supposed to are actually pointing to another spot on the sensor/film.
The net effect of this is an out-of-focus highlight appearing not as a fuzzy
ball, but a distinct balloon-shape, sometimes with an overly bright or
sharpened edge.
