Why not have an assortment of sizes?
Well, ok, I can answer that one in terms of production of the actual chip,
layout, and processing after the fact, but extending Fuji's SuperCCD idea
beyond a single Large and Small bucket/pixel size is probably a reasonable
way of achieving such a goal, and should allow for expanded dynamic range,
preserving shadow detail and highlights.. you can even allow the different
cells to have adjustable gain patterns to attempt to simulate different
film curves. You may even just acheive that with a single size and
adjustable gain, albeit at the expense of resolution.
hmm. sorry, bit of a brain dump there, but it's a fun thing to talk about.
