I am reminded that Canon implemented a rather nice DoF function early on in the EOS to compensate for the lens designs not supporting DoF scales. As implemented, you take a focus reading for the close object and another for the far object and the camera calculates the required aperture and mid-point focus point to achieve sharpness at both points. I used this a bit back in the early days of the EOS and was impressed with how well it worked.
