I don't have any test results for printers of that class but, if I was
looking for one my requirements would be:
1) pigment inks (for longevity)
2) able to print labels on CDs
3) at least 4 (CMYK) and preferably more ink tanks
I don't believe Canon has any all pigment ink machine in what I'll call
the "under $100 class" printers. In fact, maybe they don't have any
printer that is all pigment. That leaves Epson and HP. Both companies
produce both dye and pigment ink printers with HP having been fairly
late to the pigment inks. Epson pigment inks are called "Durabrite",
dye inks are called "Claria". HP pigment inks are called "Vivera". I
don't know what the HP dye inks are called or even whether there still
are HP dye inks.
I would doubt that there's a great deal of difference in performance
between machines of equal price class and ink type. More ink colors,
will however, likely produce better prints. Some printers, like the
Epson Workforce 30 advertise 5 ink cartridges. But that's not 5 colors
or two shades of black/gray. Just two black cartridges of the same
type. So it's up to you to pore through the specifications of the
printers available in your area or by mail and look for the printer that
meets your personal specs.
If I was looking for myself the first place I'd look is the "clearance
center" at Epson. I just looked and see that Epson does have such a
place in the UK. They sell closeouts and both older and current
refurbished products. Maybe there's something here to your liking.
