What? Z's?
I wondered if it were a pronunciation ah, issue. Didn't notice when I
was in the UK, but do British English speakers employ more sibilance
with the -lise in utilise? We tend to pronounce it with more of a
buzz than a hiss.
As a slightly related aside, one of the few things I recall from a
linguistics class I took while pursuing a degree in Anthropology was
that when we read silently, we tend to "pronounce" differently than
when we read aloud. With me, a good example of this is the difference
between British Harbour and American Harbor. When I read UK editions
of books, as well as posts here, I tend to "pronounce" the "u" in
harbour and colour, etc. It's a subtle thing, but it's there. When
talking or reading aloud, however, there's no trace of the "u" at
all. I'm assuming all those extraneous "u's" date back to the Conquest?
