Here's another possibility. I was browsing through this gallery. I kept
thinking I should like the images more than I did, but wasn't sure why.
Some, particularly, the verticals, I would like larger ... but that's
not really it. Somehow they seemed subdued, lacking in oomph.
Then I realized; I was looking at relatively small images in a sea of
pure, bright white. It's like it was overloading my visual sense so that
I couldn't see the true tones of the image itself.
For your consideration, here's how this image looks with different
luminance neutral backgrounds.

Personally, I prefer either black or the darkest gray, but any of the
grays help me a lot. I just don't see the same image with the white
background.
