I got my first deer last year right here in the neighborhood. It was
about 9 or 10 pm and dark. I was about 1/4 mile from home. I stopped
at an intersection, turned the corner and had gotten the car up only to
about 20mph. Suddenly there was a huge bang (from where I couldn't
tell) and the car seemed to leap into the air. I thought I had hit a
big stone or log in the road. When I got the car turned around and went
back I was startled to find a doe laying in the road. She was
apparently running at high speed from between two houses and out into
the street. She crossed the opposite side of the road and hit the
fender of my car just ahead of the driver's door and put a dent into it.
Her momentum threw her hind quarters under the rear wheel. Running
over her is what caused the car to leap into the air. It also paralyzed
her from the waist down. She was desperately trying to crawl out of the
road but only the front feet were working. I had to call the local
sheriff who reluctantly (due to it being a populated area) dispatched
her with a shot to the head.
I was astounded that she had not seen me or been able to change course
in time. If I'd have been on a motorcycle it might have been me getting
dispatched.
