He was shooting with 24 and 40mm. 24mm gives you lots of leeway if you
can shoot at f/8. Hyperfocal distance is 7.2 feet. Focus at 8 feet to
be safe and you're good to go from less than 4 feet to infinity. f/5.6
is a little dicier with a 10.2 foot hyperfocal distance. If you focus
at 11 feet you're still good down to 5.3 feet. Just up the ISO to keep
the aperture in the safe zone. 40mm is starting to get a lot more
critical. But if you can shoot at f/11 you can focus at 15 feet and be
good from 7.4 feet to infinity.
Then there is also the possibility of using what I call a "near"
hyperfocal distance. With the 40mm at f/11, for instance, if you focus
at 12 feet you'll still capture from 6.6 to 70 feet. You don't have
infinity for sure but if you're shooting in a street crowd you probably
don't care. Give up the far distance for another couple feet of close
distance.
