It's all in the algorithm. The converter looks at nearest neighbor pixels
to determine the color for a given pixel. However, it isn't looking
strictly at 4-pixel blocks, but can include a radius of 2-4 pixels or more.
Luminance is commonly thought to be per specific pixel, but again there is
usually some merging of nearby neighbor values. Each raw converter has its
own secret-sauce it applies to this conversion process.
Raw Shooter, for example, worked EXTREMELY well with Minolta A1 files and
the resolution of the files with RS/RSE was simply amazing. I got a minimum
of 200 LPH increase with RSE over any other converter.
For Olympus E-1 files, I have had the very best results (color, tonality,
editability) using Olympus Viewer/Studio and second best with Capture One.
