I was surprised too that Wayne got so close. But you don't need to
worry about being attacked. Garter and ribbon snakes are usually only
about 1/2 meter long, quite docile and can usually be handled without
any problems. I did get bitten by one once when I was a small boy. But
I had been chasing and picking him up repeatedly for about 15 minutes
and I think he had gotten tired of it. The bite just feels like a
little pinch. I would be much more nervous picking up a rat than a
garter snake. Rats have big teeth. :-)
But I would not recommend that you play with most of the snakes in Oz or
a select few in the US.
